This is one crazy Scandinavian. I don't know how he came up with this or had the patience to work out the complexities of actually making it look good, but this guy manages to make phenominal sculptures and still lifes out of a single piece of paper. It's not Origami though, as my Origami expert cousin was quick to point out, it's something completely new.
Well this is good news! It seems that a company has started to build a fiber optic web on top of the existing internet which is going to be targetted at online gaming in the hopes of practically eliminating lag. The only catch is that it won't be free but that isn't surprising I guess. Here's a bit from the article
"How much faster is it? Using a ping command which is a network diagnostic utility, it would take you around 80-100 milliseconds for your ping to travel from the east coast to the west coast and back on today's Internet. Using the dedicated GameRail fiber optic network, pings around 30ms are seen. When you consider light travels 1000 miles every 8-10ms on a fiber optic line, the fastest this could possibly be with no hops is 25ms. So this is a very significant speed increase."
Wow, I never would have guessed that but here is what C|Net has to say about it:
"Of the 117 million active gamers in the U.S., 56 percent play games online. Sixty-four percent of those online gamers are female, according to results of the survey, released by Nielsen Entertainment on Thursday."
Hmmmmm.... sucks to work for war profiteers. As the one guy says "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." Guess it would have been better if he had heeded that advice before his truck got attacked.
This is a video showing what it may be like to be a passenger on the planned Virgin Galactic space flights. It's funny that I happened to find this video today because just yesterday my wife and I went to this meeting at a travel agency where they try to sell you on joining their vacation club. We only went because they gave you a 7 night cruise just for going and listening to their pitch. When we got there they had us fill out a form with some questions and one of the questions was "What is your dream vacation?" Being the wise-ass I am, I wrote down "going to the International Space Station." I wrote that down primarily to throw them off but it is truly one of my dreams so when I stumbled across this video I can't tell you how excited I got. There is only one small hurdle that I still have to overcome. It's $200,000 a ticket so for my wife and I to do it we would have to sell our house. But if that is the cost now, I have to think in 20 years or so it's going to be borderline reasonably priced... that is if the idea takes off. Check out their website here.
Finally somebody made this! Basically it's an remote controlled plane with a camera on it that is controlled by a VR headset. I looked into making one of these about 3 months ago. I found some very small wireless security camera that sold for around $100. I also looked into wireless webcams. They have some new ones now which can pan left right and zoom. Didn't get much farther than looking though. I still want to hook one up to my Traxxas Revo though.
Yeah you probably don't know who he is but he did the artwork for the last Tool album among others. His story is pretty cool. Stick around and listen to his story about his Tree of Life painting..... I think that's what he called it.
My friend Shawn showed me this video a while back and I was captivated. The mind that comes up with this stuff has to be pretty twisted. It is so bizarre and so completely out there yet it is so freakin' cool. I love the mood, I love the build up to the end. It combines the best of that Pink Floy feeling of otherworldliness with a hard edged ominous driving sound. Can't say enough about it.
The two following videos are part 1 and part 2 of a promotionl video for the "Best of" collection that came out a few years back. That aside, it is a pretty good glimpse through their journey along with some interesting behind the scenes tidbits.
If it wasn't for Pink floyd we wouldn't have Radiohead. Pink Floyd is timeless. I can't even count how many fuzzy nights I have spent listening to them. Here is one of their greatest works. It's a live version and its a little different than the album version. Great stuff.
There is a reason that OK Computer by Radiohead is considered by many to be the best Rock album of the 20th century. This cut from that album definately illustrates a lot of the reasons that people, me included, consider that album something truly special. Inventive lyrics, great atmosphere, mood changes throughout and a truly unique sound.
This is a video for the song Rabbit In Your Headlights by Unkle. You may mistake it for a Radiohead song (I did) because of the vocal by Thom Yorke. Great song, great video.
While Brandon Routh did a great job in the latest film I couldn't help thinking what the movie would have been like had Chris Reeve played the title role. I think the thing that Reeve was able to bring to the role that I missed the most in Routh's performance is the feeling that there was a sensitive compassionate being behind the suit. I hope in the next Singer Superman movie Routh gets the opportunity to play with a little more range than he did in Superman Returns. Here is a recut trailer for the re-release of "Superman: The Movie."
Here's the Wonder Woman openning theme from the old TV show complete with soul back-up singers, the sorriest excuse for animation ever and ofcourse Linda Carter in her blue diaper.
Human rights violations, a despot that kills and tortures his own citizens... those things don't matter. Come to North Korea for the water slide and..... not much else.
So I have basically had my fill of WW2 games. I am just plain tired of them. That's why when I read a review of Company of Heroes I didn't get too excited. Add to that that it was an RTS (Real Time Strategy) game and it sounded like a formula for disaster. My luck with RTS's has not been too great. They always seem overcomplicated and boring to me. But given the complete lack of interesting titles out there lately (give me Spore already!!!) and the rave reviews I was reading for Company of Heroes, I figured I would download the demo and give it a try. Man am I glad I did. The game looks as good as the Call of Duty series, has really well thought out deep game play, and it actually made this jaded gamer's adrenaline rush at times! No game lately has done that... well except maybe F.E.A.R. Check it out. You won't be dissapointed.
